Was SVG Just A Slow Burner?

I have previously described SMIL and SVG as W3C standards which have failed to take off. But is SVG, in particular, a slow burner rather than a failure?  As described in a post on the SVG mailing list the example web application built using SVG 1.1 looks interesting especially as “It works in Opera, Firefox, Chrome, Safari, IE7 w/Adobe, IE8 w/Adobe, IE9 PP7“.
