The ‘New Normal’

I don’t know the origin of the term ‘the New Normal’ but I found an article on “The Politics Of The ‘New Normal’” published in The ATlantic in July 2009.¬† This term is being used for the ILI 2011 conference. But what does the New Normal mean in a Library context?¬† How about:

  • Many users are now empowered to find and access resources which previously were mediated by librarians.
  • A decrease in the importance of finding via metadata and an increase in the importance of social discovery.
  • A decrease in the importance of collections of trusted resources¬† and an increase in the importance of users being able to evaluate the resources.
  • A decrease in an unquestioning belive in the value of libraries and librarians and a need for the sector to be able to demonstrate value and pro-actively market themselves.

Is that reasonable?
