The ‘New Normal’

I don’t know the origin of the term ‘the New Normal’ but I found an article on “The Politics Of The ‘New Normal’” published in The ATlantic in July 2009.  This term is being used for the ILI 2011 conference. But what does the New Normal mean in a Library context?  How about:

  • Many users are now empowered to find and access resources which previously were mediated by librarians.
  • A decrease in the importance of finding via metadata and an increase in the importance of social discovery.
  • A decrease in the importance of collections of trusted resources  and an increase in the importance of users being able to evaluate the resources.
  • A decrease in an unquestioning belive in the value of libraries and librarians and a need for the sector to be able to demonstrate value and pro-actively market themselves.

Is that reasonable?
